SUA, SU Take Team Titles at Cal Pac Showcase
Soka held off a final round push from Providence Christian to take team honors at the Cal Pac Showcase, held at Eagle Vines Golf Club in American Canyon, Calif. The Lady Lions had three golfers finish in the top 10, led by Linnea and Kalen Yamamoto, who placed third and fourth, respectively, in the field of 19, and Maria Brooks placed ninth. Simpson's Michelle Euan was at the top of the leaderboard each of the three days of the tournament .and earned individual medalist honors with rounds of 77-86-80—243; 17 strokes in front of Providence Christian's Reyana Gonzalez, who finished second on the par-72, 5,922-yard course.
In the men's competition, Simpson posted the low round on all three days of the event, outdistancing the other three teams to soar to the team title. Five Red Hawks placed in the top 10 in the field of 17, topped by Trey Alwert, who outdueled Soka's Leo Takaku and Cal Maritime's Mason Sylvester for medalist honors. Alwert shot in the 70s each round, posting s 232 final total as Takaku (235) and Sylvester (238) had strong final rounds on the par-72, 6,879-yard course but could not quite catch Alwert. SU's Fynne Junghans, Adam Cotter, Ty Salvador, and Ryan Gavin filled the next four slots on the leaderboard.
The Cal Pac's qualifying match for the NAIA National Championship will take place on April 14-16 at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cal Pac will be competing alongside the Frontier Conference for an automatic bid to the national event. The women's tournament will take place at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Mich., from May 13-16, and the men's tournament will be played at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., from May 20-23.
