SU Streaks To Top of Cal Pac Standings
Simpson opened last week's California Pacific Conference schedule with a split at Westcliff in Irvine, Calif., and then came home to Northern California and ran off four consecutive wins over the Warriors to lift the Red Hawks into first place in the conference standings. SU, now 8-4 in league play and 21-16 overall, opened a one-game lead over La Sierra (5-3) and a five-game advantage over Westcliff (3-9). Pitching was the key ingredient for the Red Hawks, most notably Jacquelyn Lujan. The sophomore right-hander tossed a complete-game one-hitter in a 2-0 win to start the week. After a WU win in the nightcap, the two teams traveled to Redding, Calif., for a four-game set. In the opener, Lujan again went the distance, this time a 7-0 decision with eight strikeouts. In Friday's second game, Lily Rojas went five innings, gave up one earned run, and Lujan threw the final two for the save in a 2-1 decision. On Saturday, Lujan went five more innings, giving up one earned run and trailed 3-0 when Jessica Ulshoeffer entered the circle. Over the final two innings, she faced the minimum six batters, striking out two, while the offense rallied for four runs in the bottom of the 6th to earn a 4-3 victory. Elyse Benson's two-out, two-run double plated the tying and go-ahead runs to cap the comeback. In the finale, Rojas, Ulshoeffer, and Lujan combined on a three-hit, five-inning 7-3 win. Kassandra Soria was 3-for-4 at the plate, Brianna Lopez-Cortez went 2-for 4 and drove in three runs, and Jessica Heck and Jordan Adami each added two hits.
