MCU Hires Flanagan to Head Men's Soccer
Marymount California Athletic Director Courtney Thomsen announced that Joe Flanagan has been selected as the new head coach for the Mariner men's soccer team. Flanagan is the third head coach since the inception of men's soccer as an NAIA sport.
"Joe Brings a wealth of knowledge to out athletic department and men's soccer program," Thomsen said. "We are eager to see how he can continue to build upon the continued success with the Mariner men's soccer team."
Joe FlanaganFlanagan will be joining the Mariners from NCAA Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he spent time as the women's soccer coach and was the men's coach from 1994-2017. In his time with the Toros, Flanagan won two NCAA National Championships, five NCAA Far West Championships, nine CCAA Championships, and he was twice voted the National Coach of the Year, as well as the CCAA Coach of the Year five times. Flanagan had a 336-131-44 in his 24 years and is in the top 10 for NCAA overall victories and winning percentage.
Along with being the head coach at CSUDH, Flanagan was a West Region Coach for the Olympic Development Program and was the Club Director at the Beach Futbol Club. In addition to his coaching stint, Flanagan played four years of college soccer in Carson, Calif., as well. After graduation, he played several years of professional soccer for the Los Angeles Heat, Los Angeles United, and LA Salsa.
With his playing and coaching experience, his ability to build a winning culture, and recruiting capabilities, Flanagan has put eight players from CSUDH into the professional ranks; the most current players are Kei Kamara (Colorado Rapids), Alejandro Covarrubias (Tulsa Roughnecks), and Tony Alfaro (Chivas de Guadalajara).
Flanagan and his family reside in Rancho Palos Verdes.
