UAV and ERAU Advance to Semifinal Round

No. 6 seed Simpson held the California Pacific Conference's most prolific scorer in check with just one goal, but that was enough for #3 Antelope Valley to edge the Red Hawks and move on to the semifinal round of the Cal Pac Championship Tournament, held at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.

The Pioneers will meet up with tournament host and #2 seed Marymount California (11-4-3 overall) at 1:30 p.m. in tomorrow's second round of action. Top-seeded UC Merced (13-3-2) will square off with #5 Embry-Riddle in the first game of the semifinals at 11:00 a.m., after the Eagles clipped #4 Benedictine-Mesa 1-0 earlier today.

A lot is on the line in the semifinal matches. Because the Cal Pac has two automatic qualifiers for the NAIA National Tournament, UCM has already punched a ticket to the Opening Round, which begins on Monday, Nov. 26. The winner of the postseason tournament will get the second automatic bid. If the Bobcats win out, the team they play in the title game will earn the second bid.

UAV's Manuel Medina, the leading scorer not only in the Cal Pac but in the NAIA, punched home a goal in the 63rd minute of the match, and the Pioneer defense held a relentless SU effort in check to earn the victory, limiting the Red Hawks to just two shots on goal over 90 minutes.

The Pioneers move to 11-8 overall this year, and SU, which came into the playoffs riding a four-game win streak, finished the season with a 6-11 mark.

Jacob Baker netted the only goal of the contest to lift Embry-Riddle over #4 Benedictine-Mesa in the first quarterfinal contest. Baker headed in a pass from Marc Birkvald early in the second half to provide the Eagle defense all the offense it would need to advance in the playoffs. ERAU keeper Alastair Stark turned back all four Redhawk shots on goal to earn the shutout.

With the win, ERAU improves to 11-6-1 overall this season while BenU closes out the 2018 campaign with a 9-7 slate.
