Carranza Aces, But BENU Misses Cut at National Championship

Benedictine Mesa's Sebastian Carranza drained one of two holes-in-one at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at Dalton Golf and Country Club in Dalton, Ga, but the Redhawks fell off the pace early in the second round and dropped below the top 15 (plus ties) on the team leaderboard.  BENU, the California Pacific Conference champion, put itself in a good position following the first round of play, but Texas Wesleyan and Dalton State (Ga.) both posted consecutive sub-300 team scores to lead sixteen teams and the top seven individuals not on a team into the final rounds on Thursday and Friday. Seven individuals make the cut due to a tie for the sixth-best individual.  Carranza aced the 174-yard par-3 hole nine—his final shot of the tournament—and missed the cut by one stroke after finishing with rounds of 76-75—151 to put him in a tie for 29th place in the field of 156 golfers.  James Mackie opened with a round of 76 but finished the second round with an 82, and Tony Mike Bonadonna had an 82 on the first day of play but followed it up with a 77 to jump up the player leaderboard.  Eddie Winkelmann (80-83—163) and Miguel Villa (80-83—163) again matched scores over their final round on the par 72, 7043-yard course.
