BENU Tied in 18th Place at Nationals

Good weather conditions led to good scores in the opening round of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships at Dalton Golf and Country Club in Dalton, Ga, and one of those was California Pacific Conference champion Benedictine Mesa.  But the Redhawks still have some work to do to avoid falling below the cut line that will come into play after tomorrow's second round.  They scored well, posting a solid 312 over the first 18 holes, putting them in a tie for 18th place in the field of 30 teams, which will be reduced to the top 15 teams (plus ties) and six individuals who have not already made the cut with their teams (plus ties).  BENU currently is sitting just two strokes behind 15th place and has two teams to pass in order to make the cut.  The Redhawks tee off at 4:30 a.m. PT for tomorrow's second round, starting at Hole 1.

NAIA Men's Golf National Championship - First Round results

Thirteen golfers shot par or better and another eight were just 1-over on the first tour around the par 72, 7043-yard course.  Five teams carded totals below 300.  BENU's James Mackie and Sabastian Carranza both finished with rounds of 76, putting the duo in a tie for 43th place in the field of 156 golfers.  Eddie Winkelmann and Miguel Villa shot 80, and Tony Mike Bonadonna had an 82 on the first day of play.
