Three Contending for Men’s Title, ERAU Women Pull Away

 

 

With an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship on the line, the second-round Team Leaderboard of the California Pacific Conference Championship got tighter as the top three teams finished within two strokes of each other to create the potential for a dramatic final 18 holes tomorrow.  Opening round leader Benedictine Mesa followed its first-day score of 295 with a 294 round but did not create a lot of distance from the next two finishers, who closed day two with rounds of 295 (Embry-Riddle) and 296 (Park-Gilbert).  As a result, the Redhawks hold a 9-stroke advantage over the Eagles and Buccaneers, who are tied for second place, putting even greater importance on every shot in the final round.  All six teams competing in the tournament improved on their first-round scores.

Individual scoring also improved on the second day as six players shot par or below on the par-72, 6794-yard Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura, Calif.  BENU's James Mackie, who carded a 71 in his opening round, posted a 70 over the second 18 to take a 4-stroke lead over two players tied for second—Providence Christian's Sean Vann (74-71) and BENU's Sabastian Carranza (70-75).  ERAU's Tyler Macpherson and Park's Eli Cruzan each finished with 72s on Tuesday, moving them into a tie for 4th place.

ERAU's women continued to widen its lead over the other three Cal Pac teams, shooting just 16 over par, as the Eagles set their sights on a 10th consecutive team title.  The Eagles, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, again held the top four slots on the Player Leaderboard, but Hailey Stevenson's second-round 72—the only golfer to hit par so far on the par-72, 5734-yard course—moved her into first place.  Stevenson, who shot 76 on Monday, opened up a 6-stroke lead over Kaetlin Halseth, who followed up her opening round 73 with an 81.  Maisy Alsen (80-75) and Charlotte Giffin (79-76) are tied for 3rd place with Cal Maritime's Allison Bailey (82-79) moving into 5th place with Soka's Kalen Yamamoto (81-86) slipping to 6th place.

The women are on the course first for tomorrow's final round, starting with a 7:00 tee time, and the men's first group heads out at 7:50 for what should be an exciting final 18 holes.
