ERAU Women Start Hot, BENU Men Take Early Lead

Embry-Riddle's women's golf team finished its first round of the California Pacific Conference Golf Championship just 20 strokes over par, and the Eagles find themselves with a dominating 89-stroke lead over Soka and well ahead of Cal Maritime and Benedictine Mesa.  ERAU, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, is well on its way to claiming its 10th consecutive team title and remain the only champion the Cal Pac has known since the tournament's inaugural event in 2014.  The Eagles seized the top four spots on the Player Leaderboard and five of the top seven as they took control early on the par-72, 5734-yard Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura, Calif.  Kaetlin Halseth topped the 19-player field with a 1-over 73, carding four birdies, followed by Hailey Stevenson (76), Charlotte Giffin (79), and Maisy Alsen (80).  SUA's Kalen Yamamoto sits in 5th place after finishing with an 81, and CSUM's Allison Bailey is in 6th with an 82 in her opening round.

After one round, the men's event is shaping up to be the most competitive in conference history.  Five teams are within 20 strokes of each other on the Team Leaderboard, and all five of those teams have individuals in the top six in the field of 31 golfers on the par-72, 6794-yard course.  BENU finished with a 7-over 295, putting the Redhawks in front of Park-Gilbert by seven strokes, defending champion ERAU by eight, Providence Christian by 15, and Simpson by 20.

BENU's Sebastian Carranza and James Mackie carded the only sub-par rounds on the day, posting rounds of 70 and 71, respectively, to claim the top two slots on the Player Leaderboard.  PCC's Sean Vann, SU's Gustaf Yngfalk, and Park's Jax Sisson all finished at 2-over 74 to tie for 3rd place, and five others are tied for 6th place with rounds of 75:  ERAU's Tyler Macpherson, Jordan Garypie, and Robert Brackett; Park's Eli Cruzan and Riley Wortman.

The men's first group in tomorrow morning's second round start at 7:00 am, and the women's first group heads out at 7:50.
