Cal Pac Golf Championships Tee Off Tomorrow

Sunday's rainy practice round left the field drenched, but the forecast is better for tomorrow's start of the California Pacific Conference Golf Championships and runs through Wednesday, April 17.  Golfers will play 18 holes each day with a bid to the NAIA National Championship going out to the winning team.  This year's men's and women's events will be held at Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura, Calif., and marks the first time Providence Christina has hosted a conference championship event.

Since its inception in 2014, Cal Pac women's golf has been dominated by Embry-Riddle.  The Eagles, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA in the latest Coaches' Top 25 Poll, have won every championship tournament, and this season's squad looks primed to claim the program's 10^th consecutive team title.  Of the top 20 scores posted this spring, ERAU golfers have produced 19 of the top scores—the lone exception is Simpson's Michelle Euan.  The Eagles have depth as well as talent, and experienced golfers like Kaetlin Halseth, Hailey Stevenson, Maisy Alsen, and Libby Axen have competed in top tournaments as well as multiple NAIA National Championships.

On the men's side, however, the path to the national stage is not as clear.  ERAU has won eight of the last 10 team titles, but the talent pool in the conference has grown, and several teams are ready to snap ERAU's three consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Championship.  Benedictine Mesa, which received votes in the NAIA national poll, has several golfers producing consistent rounds this season.  James Mackie, Sebastian Carranza, Tony Mike Bonadonna, and Eddie Winklemann may have the talent to earn the Redhawks' first automatic bid to the national tournament.  Providence Christian also has four golfers who could, with some additional help from teammates, extend the Sea Beggars season another weekend:  Sean Vann, Hayden Hughes, Tony Kirschner, and Malik Edd have shown they can score with anyone in the conference.  Simpson's Dean Knight and Park-Gilbert's Noah Blaickner have the ability to keep their teams in contention over the three-day tournament.
