California Pacific Conference Play Starts This Week

This Thursday, the California Pacific Conference will tip off their 15th season of conference play with three men's and women's doubleheaders at schools from Redding to Scotts Valley. The doubleheaders are Pacific Union College at Simpson University in Redding, Holy Names University at Menlo College in Atherton and CSU Maritime Academy at Bethany University in Scotts Valley.

In men's basketball, the Holy Names University Hawks, one of last year's regular season champions, lead the conference standings after the conclusion of non-conference play with a 9-8 record. Included in the Hawks' 9-8 record was Hawks' men's basketball coach Dennis Jones' 100th win as head coach of the Hawks' men's basketball program. The Hawks recorded wins over Academy of Art University, Concordia University (OR), Evangel University, Multnomah University, Northern New Mexico College, Pacific University, Portland Bible College, San Diego Christian College and West Coast Baptist College. In second is the CSU Maritime Academy Keelhaulers, another of last year's regular season champions, with a 4-12 record. The Keelhaulers has wins over Academy of Art University, Lewis-Clark State College, Lewis and Clark College and Notre Dame De Namur University. Menlo College, the conference's runner-up last season, came in third with a 3-10 record with wins over CSU Monterey Bay, The College of Idaho and Pomona Pitzer. The defending conference champion and the preseason pick to win the conference by the coaches, William Jessup University came in fourth with a 3-11 record with wins over Northwest Christian University, Southern Oregon University and UC Santa Cruz.

In women's basketball, the Menlo College Oaks, last year's runner up, leads the standings after non-conference play with a 7-9 record. The Oaks recorded wins over Claremont Mudd Scripps, Johnson and Wales University (CO), Judson University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Southern Oregon University, UC Santa Cruz and Walla Walla University. In second is the defending conference champions Holy Names University with a 5-12. The Hawks recorded wins over Dominican University, CSU East Bay, Holy Names University, Academy of Art University and Maryville University. In third place are the Bethany University Bruins with a 3-8 record. The Bruins recorded wins over Corban University, La Sierra University and Pomona Pitzer.

Players to Watch:

Men's

David Scott (Holy Names) - The junior forward from San Antonio, Texas leads the conference in points (22.06) and in rebounds (7.41) per game. The Hawks' record is testament to Scott's leadership as he has scored twenty points or more in all but six games this season.

Julian Harris (Menlo) - The senior from Fremont, California leads the Oaks in points per game (19.46) and leads the league in steals per game (1.77). With Harris leading the team on the court as a senior, the Oaks look to come out quickly and contend for a conference championship.

Haven Piatt (CSU Maritime) - The senior from Lincoln, California leads the Keelhaulers in points per game (11.6) and is sixth in the conference in that category. The Keelhaulers come into conference play having won three of their last five.

Women's

Monique Ayers-Calvello (Menlo) - The senior from San Francisco, California leads the Oaks in points (13.9) and rebounds per game (8). The Oaks look to go back to the conference championship game again this season.

Jamie-Leigh Ronolo (Holy Names) - The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii leads the Hawks on the court in scoring with 9.9 points per game. Her senior leadership will come in handy for the Hawks who look for their fourth straight conference championship.

Bekah Wofford (Simpson) - The freshman from San Diego, California leads the conference in points per game with 15.4 a contest and leads the RedHawks in rebounds per game with 6.4. The RedHawks look to climb in the conference standings this season.
