Northern New Mexico Plays First Cal Pac Contest
The Northern New Mexico men's and women's basketball programs begin their inaugural conference opener this week as a member of the California Pacific Conference. The men's program (3-9) will take on Westcliff (6-5; 1-1 Cal Pac) in a neutral site on the campus of Nelson University-Arizona.
The Eagles are led by junior guard Harkirath Makhar. The native from West Valley City, UT, currently leads the team and the conference in scoring (18.4 ppg) and 3-pt shooting percentage (47.4%). He also leads the team in rebounding and ranks fifth in the Cal Pac in rebounding with a tad over 5 rebounds per contest (5.3 rpg). The second leading scorer for No. New Mexico is junior guard Ja'Kwon Hill. The six-footer from Albuquerque, NM, ranks fifth in the conference in points per game with 16.5 and is third behind the arc shooting at a 45.5% clip per contest.
The women's official opener is against Stanton (1-14; 1-1 Cal Pac) in Arizona on Saturday, January 17. The Eagles (5-10) are currently ranked third in the Cal Pac this season and are led by small forward Jayden Jenkins. The senior from Las Vegas, NM, is first on her team and conference in three of the four offensive categories this season. She is first in scoring (17.3 ppg), second in rebounds (10.1 rpg) and third in field goal percentage (41.2%).
Both of Stanton's men's and women's programs kicked off their first season in the Cal Pac and NAIA last week. Both split their first two games against Simpson and Pacific Union and are both tied for first place in the California Pacific Conference.
In the men's program, the Elks (3-10; 1-1 Cal Pac) are led by guard Nigel McKay. The senior from Monrovia, CA, is in the Top 10 in scoring and rebounding this season in conference play. He is also accompanied by sophomore guard Jovanni Tapia. The Arizona native is coming of a 20 point, 11 rebound performance in a narrow loss to Pacific Union.
Stanton women's program (1-14; 1-1 Cal Pac) is looking to turn things around as they defeated Pacific Union last week in a highly contested game. The Elks are led by Nicole Ros who ranks first on her team in scoring (7.6 ppg) which is in the Top-20 in scoring in conference play. Also, forward Teagan Cohen is a force in the paint as she leads her team in rebounding (6.7 rpg) which is seventh overall in the conference.
