Cal Pac Names Players of the Week for Sept. 23

The following California Pacific Conference student-athletes have been recognized as the conference Players of the Week for their performances during the period of Sept. 16-22:

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

Sutton Denny of Providence Christian led her squad to a win in its only match last week.  The sophomore midfielder from Manteca, Calif., scored twice and assisted on a third goal as the Sea Beggars rolled to a 5-0 win over Justice.

Defensive Player of the Week

Arlene Yepez of Soka played a key role in the Lady Lions' 1-0 victory over La Sierra in the Cal Pac opener.  The sophomore defender from Oxnard, Calif., came away with timely and clean tackles as the defense held the Golden Eagles to just four shots, two on goal.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

UC Merced's Daniel Borges tallied six points with two goals and two assists last week to lead the Bobcats to an unbeaten three-game stretch, registering a goal or an assist in all three matches. The senior forward from Turlock, Calif., ended his week by scoring the game's first goal and then assisting the equalizer against 2023 NCAA Tournament qualifier CSU Monterey Bay.

Defensive Player of the Week

UC Merced's Edwin Casillas led the Bobcats to a 2-0-1 week, keeping them unbeaten through the first five matches of the season.  The junior center back from Sonora, Calif., anchored a defense that allowed just ten shots on target across the three matches.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Attacker of the Week

Jacey Loewen of Providence Christian knocked down 38 kills in three matches last week, averaging 3.45 per set while hitting at a .380 clip.  The junior middle blocker from Paso Robles, Calif., was also in on eight blocks, two solo.

Setter of the Week

Tehani Ho'okano of Providence Christian directed the Sea Beggars to a win in three matches last week.  The senior from Kane'ohe, Hawaii, dished out 47 assists—a 4.27 average per set—and also contributed 29 digs, five kills, and two service aces.

Defender of the Week

UC Merced's Semiramis Tanasescu recorded a career-high eight blocks, one solo, in a sweep over Caltech on Saturday.  The junior middle blocker from Irvine, Calif., also had six kills without an error on nine swings for a .667 hitting percentage. Her blocking efforts moved her into sixth place program history with 149 career blocks.
