UAV Ends Baseball And Softball Seasons
Antelope Valley announced today the decision to cease sponsorship of its baseball and softball teams for the remainder of the 2024 season. The cancellation is effective immediately.
The UAV basketball teams – both Cal Pac champions and NAIA tournament qualifiers – will play on into the postseason. They will discover their tournament destinations and opponents on March 6.
The baseball/softball decision came as a result of the financial situation of the campus, coupled with upcoming determinations by various state agencies regarding the institution's status. The uncertainty was putting future eligibility of the student-athletes at risk. To preserve their future seasons of play, and facilitate transfer and relocation attempts, the cancellation decision was made.
Since the Pioneer baseball and softball teams had competed in under 50 percent of their allowable contests per NAIA rule, all student-athletes will retain this season of competition for eligibility purposes at other institutions.
The Pioneers had played two league baseball series and one league softball series. Those completed Cal Pac Conference contests involving UAV will revert to "non-conference" games and not count in the official league standings.
UAV baseball won six Cal Pac championships, and advanced to the NAIA College World Series in 2018.
