Cal Pac Announces Players of the Week for Sept. 18

The following California Pacific Conference student-athletes have been recognized as the conference Players of the Week for their performances during the period of Sept. 11-17:

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

Benedictine Mesa's Neshma Rodriguez played a key role in two wins last week, totaling three goals and an assist to help her team improve to 3-1 in conference play.  On Thursday, BENU earned its first Cal Pac win when Rodriguez assisted on the game-winner in a 2-1 decision over Providence Christian.  Two days later the sophomore midfielder from Apache Junction, Ariz., tallied two goals in a 6-2 win over La Sierra.

Defensive Player of the Week

Ellie Neal of Embry-Riddle anchored a defense that dominated both opponents last week.  The Eagles did not allow either Saint Katherine or Providence Christian a shot on goal in back-to-back shutouts.  Not only did the senior defender from Gilbert, Ariz., stand strong on the back line, she also delivered two assists in Saturday's win over the Sea Beggars.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

UC Merced's Daniel Borges tallied four goals and four assists on the week, with two goals and two assists in both victories over No. 24 Westcliff and Pacific Union. In addition to knocking off a Top 25 team for the first time since 2019, the win over WU came against a team that had given up just two goals through their first six games before the Turlock, Calif., native scored two of his own.

Defensive Player of the Week

Roei Nir led the Embry-Riddle defense to back-to-back shutouts last week.  On Thursday the Eagles allowed zero shots on goal in a 5-0 win over Saint Katherine, which had entered the match unbeaten in conference.  The junior from Tel Aviv, Israel, anchored the back line and kept the defenders organized so there was no room for the Firebird attackers, and the ERAU defense followed that up with a dominating 10-0 win over Providence Christian on Saturday.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Attacker of the Week

Benedictine Mesa's Kylie Bartel helped power the Redhawks to three 3-0 wins last week.  The junior outside hitter from Mesa, Ariz., knocked down 32 kills, an average of 3.56 per set, hitting .238.  She also contributed seven service aces and, defensively, she produced 30 digs and was in on two blocks.

Setter of the Week

Isabella Taue'etia of Providence Christian had a big week, stuffing the stat sheet and guiding the team to a 3-1 record, including two in conference play.  The freshman from Hawthorne, Calif., finished the week 97 assists, including 33 in a non-conference win over Occidental, 27 digs, 10 kills, and two aces.

Defender of the Week

Embry-Riddle Libero Lily Figgins had 50 receptions this weekend with only three errors and finished with 51 digs in three ERAU victories, an average of 4.25 digs per set.  The junior from St. Charles, Mo., also had seven service aces along with 23 assists as the Eagles swept this weekend to improve to 4-1 in conference.
