Simpson University won a thrilling regular-season finale over Holy Names, 6-5 in 10 innings, to capture the 2010 California Pacific Conference softball championship and will host a three-team qualifier on April 30-May 1 for a chance to advance to the NAIA national championships. The Red Hawks (34-17, 14-2 Cal Pac) are the top seed in the qualifier, followed by second-seeded Holy Names (24-20, 12-4), and third seed University of Great Falls (16-13). The qualifier is part of an NAIA "unaffiliated grouping" of teams whose conferences do not have enough softball playing members to secure an automatic bid of their own. The Cal Pac (5 teams) and Frontier (1 team) make up the grouping, with the winner of this event advancing to the national championship.
The two-day, pressure-packed event which starts on the Redding campus this Friday, April 30. The double-elimination format features three "pool play" games on Day 1 with "if necessary" games on Saturday, May 1.
