Bethany University today announced that current assistant director of athletic administration Mark Laird has been hired as the men's basketball coach. Laird replaces Andrew Snelgrove who announced his resignation recently.
In the 2010-11 season, Laird will be coaching in his ninth season overall and second season with the Bruins. In his first season, Laird was involved in all aspects of the men's basketball program, including practice planning/coaching, film exchange, travel and budget coordination, scouting, recruiting, fund-raising, and academic monitoring.
Prior to coming to Bethany, Laird worked the previous year as a manager at Center Court with C-Webb, a restaurant owned and operated by former NBA great Chris Webber. During the 2007-2008 season, Laird worked at CSU Sacramento as the team's Director of Basketball Operations.
Laird spent three seasons at the NCAA Division II level as an assistant coach at Hawaii Pacific University from 2005 to 2007 and at Shepherd University from 2004-2005 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. At both institutions, he was involved in recruiting, opponent scouting, on-floor coaching while also being in charge of the off-season training programs, film exchange and the teams' weekly academics.
Prior to his intercollegiate coaching experience, Laird spent three years as an assistant at Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Arizona from 2001 to 2004. During his three seasons on Horizon's coaching staff, the team combined for a 51-32 record.
He has served as camp coach at the Santa Clara Men's Basketball Camp [CA] (2008), the Adidas Double Pump West Coast All-Star Camp [CA] (2007), Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic [NJ] (2005), Gary Williams Basketball Camp [MD] (2005), Lute Olson Team Camp [AZ] (2002-04) and the Rob Evans Basketball Camp [AZ] (2002-04), as well as many other High School camps and clinics.
Laird played four years of basketball for Valley Forge Christian College in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania from 1996 to 2000 where he was a two year starter and team captain during his junior and senior seasons.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Laird received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bible and Theology from Valley Forge in 2000 and a Master of Arts degree in Communication from Hawaii Pacific University in 2008.
