Head coach Bryan Rooney and his staff announced the first recruit of their 2010 recruiting class. The Keelhaulers announced the commitment of Arcata High School's Ryan DeHart. DeHart, a 6-5 forward, led the Tigers to a tremendous season that included an undefeated Humboldt/Del Norte - Big 5 season and a berth in the CIF Division IV State Playoffs, where the Tigers captured an upset win over Palma High School in the first round. DeHart made the game-winning basket in the final seconds of the game.
Rooney stated, "We are extremely excited Ryan is joining the Keelhauler family. He had an unbelievable career at Arcata where he averaged a double-double for his career but more importantly was part of winning teams under an excellent coach in Eric Vollmers. We are getting not only an excellent basketball player but, more importantly, we are getting a winner in Ryan who takes care of business in the classroom and on the floor."
A two-time Humboldt/Del Norte - Big 5 All League selection, DeHart, led his team to a 67-23 record in his three years on the varsity team. Ryan is also very active in the Arcata High School community and is a member of the school choir, which will be traveling to Europe to perform. When asked about his decision to attend Cal Maritime, DeHart elaborated, "I am impressed with Cal Maritime as a whole, including a history of excellence, a great job placement program after graduation, teachers that go the extra mile to help students, and the campus life. The staff, coaches, and students are really welcoming and respectful. The basketball program works hard as a whole, has been very successful, and I want to add to that."
He will be counted on to contribute immediately and Coach Rooney looks forward to his contributions, "Ryan is a great fit for our school and program. We are looking forward to seeing him in a Keelhauler uniform!"| Walla Walla University at | 39 |
