This Week: The Hawks drew Briar Cliff University in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament. The first round begins on Wednesday and the Hawks-Chargers match-up is on Thursday at 5 pm (PST).

Scouting the Hawks: Holy Names won the regular season and tournament championships with a 23-9 overall record and a 12-0 conference record. Jamie Leigh Ronolo led the Hawks in scoring with 13 points per game.


Scouting the Chargers: Briar Cliff finished the season at a 25-7 overall record and a 13-5 record in conference. Liz Grider led the Chargers and the nation in scoring with 25.9 points per game.

Last Time Out: This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2002 when the Chargers won 79-56 in the second round of the national tournament. The two teams had a common opponent though in Concordia University of Nebraska. The Hawks beat the Bulldogs in Oakland 49-42 while the Chargers beat the Bulldogs in conference play 97-67 and 77-52.

National Appearances: Holy Names is making their 12th appearance in the national tournament garnering a 5-10 record in those appearances. Briar Cliff is making their 9th appearance in the national tournament with a 14-7 record.


Getting To Know Briar Cliff University: Briar Cliff was founded in March of 1929. It was originally founded as a Catholic women's college. It was dedicated in 1930 and co-education at the university formally began in 1966. Briar Cliff became a university in 2001.

 

About The Coaches:

Steve Spencer is in his fifth year at Holy Names. He has a 115-71 record at Holy Names overall and has a 66-10 in California Pacific Conference play. Spencer is 124-87 overall as a head coach, which includes a year at UC Santa Cruz.

 

Mike Power is in his ninth season as the coach of the Chargers. He has a 172-122 record as the coach of the Chargers and a 306-314 overall record with stints at seven other Midwest schools.
