In the first NAIA Division II men's basketball coaches poll, the Holy Names University Hawks were ranked by the coaches at #31, scoring 23 points and the William Jessup University Warriors were ranked #40, receiving 1 point. The Hawks finished last season 7-24 and 5-11 in California Pacific Conference play. The Warriors finished last season 14-14 overall and 13-3 in California Pacific Conference play. 

Holy Names trails Huntington University by four points for #30 in the initial ranking. William Jessup is tied with University of Northwestern Ohio, Jamestown College, Morningside College, Spring Arbor University, Sterling College, Hastings College, and Indiana Institute of Technology for 40th.
