William Jessup University is proud to announce the beginning of their much anticipated softball program, slated for competition in spring of 2010.
Softball will join the ten other varsity sports currently competing in the California Pacific Conference for William Jessup. The program has been in the works for several years, but the dream is just now able to come to fruition, thanks to the work of former Del Oro standout Jessica Pistole.
Pistole comes with an impressive resume, having been mentored by renowned pitching instructor Doug Finch. "Jessica represents the best in our game."
"I am confident she has what it takes to build a championship caliber collegiate softball program at William Jessup. I have pledged my support to her and her efforts and am proud to express my enthusiasm for the future of WJU Softball."
At Del Oro, Pistole, known then as Langston, was a star pitcher for the Golden Eagles before graduating in 1998. She then took her career to Biola University, where she was honored as the GSAC pitcher of the year in 2001 and had her jersey retired upon graduation.
Jessica became involved at William Jessup in 2006, initially serving as a coach with the volleyball program. But her dream was always to get softball started at the school.
"Adding softball to our lineup of sport offerings will take us from ten to eleven collegiate varsity sports and assist with the growth and expansion goals of the university," said Farnum Smith, Athletic Director at the University. "William Jessup is a great option for high school seniors and junior college students looking to get an excellent education and play softball."
Two local players have already signed with the brand new program. First baseman Liz Benton of Loretto and third base/outfielder Rebecca McIntosh of Wheatland were the very first recruits to commit.
Benton will finish out her career as a member of the last class at Loretto High School, which will close its doors after their 2009 graduation. She will then join the first class of softball athletes at WJU.
"I'm excited to be part of the growth of Jessup's athletic program, making history as a member of WJU's first softball team," McIntosh said.
