This Week: The Hawks drew Sterling College in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament. The first round begins on Thursday and the Holy Names-Sterling match-up is on Thursday at 6:45 pm (PST).

Scouting the Warriors:
The Lady Warriors clinched the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 16-2 record. This is Sterling's tenth KCAC regular season title and will be their thirteenth trip to the NAIA Div. II National Tournament, all under Head Coach Lonnie Kruse. Sterling (26-5) is led by senior Ashley Kraft. Kraft is averaging 16.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season.


Scouting the Hawks: Holy Names finished the regular season with a 24-8 record. This is the second time in as many years that the Hawks have gone to the National Tournament. The Hawks won back-to-back regular season and California Pacific Conference  Raquel Hyche is the team leader in points (13.4), Liz Widgren leads the team in rebounds with 7.8 and Larisa Nakasone leads the team in assists with 3.9 per contest. 

Last Time Out: This is the first meeting between the two schools.

National Appearances: Holy Names has had 9 prior trips to the National Championships; the Hawks have a 5-9 record in those games. Sterling has had 12 prior trips racking up a record of 13-12.

Getting To Know Sterling College:
The college was founded in 1887 by the Synod of Kansas of the United Presbyterian Church of North America as Cooper Memorial College and changed its name to Sterling College in 1920. It is known for its partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

About The Coaches:
Steve Spencer is in his fifth year at the helm of the Hawks, helping the program to conference titles as well as appearances in the NAIA Division II National Tournament each year. Spencer brings a 116-70 overall record as a head coach including an 107-54 mark as the coach of the Hawks. Holy Names has gone an impressive 69-11 in California Pacific Conference play under Coach Spencer over the course of the last five seasons.

 

Lonnie Kruse is in his 28th season as Head Coach of the Sterling College women's basketball program. Under's Kruse's direction, the Lady Warrior basketball program has had 27 straight winning seasons. Kruse has been named KCAC "Coach of the Year" ten times. The Lady Warriors have posted seventeen 21+ win seasons, won the KCAC regular season title nine times and qualified twelve times for the NAIA national tournament. Under Kruse's leadership the women have also maintained a high national ranking, ending eleven of the last fourteen seasons in the top twenty-five nationally.
