Top-seed Marymount California, South winner William Jessup, South runner-up Embry-Riddle, and La Sierra are the four semifinalists for the 2013 Cal Pac men's soccer championships which open Friday, Nov. 15, at Embry-Riddle's Varsity field in Prescott, Ariz.
MCU, ranked #25 nationally last week, captured the overall #1 seed by winning the South division with a 12-1 league mark and a stellar 14-3 overall record. The Mariners, as the tournament's #1 seed, will face #4 La Sierra (8-8, 8-5) at 1:30 p.m. in the tournament's second match.
William Jessup (8-4-1, 9-8-1) grabbed the #2 seed by winning a tie-breaker over Menlo for the North division top spot. The Warriors face off against tournament host and #3 seed Embry-Riddle (10-2-1, 12-4-1) at 6:30 p.m. in the first day's final contest.
The respective divisional winners each secured an automatic spot in the semifinals, with the final two positions determined by the NAIA's mRPI rating system. The complex formula considers the team's winning percentage, the winning percentage of all opponents, and includes such factors which reward results against nationally ranked teams and road wins, among others.
The Cal Pac men's and women's tournaments are held concurrently at Embry-Riddle.
The men's championship game is set for Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:00 p.m. (following the 4:30 women's title game).
